New York, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore… Sydney? Australian cities are beginning to see the opportunity to cement themselves as global retail hot spots, particularly for luxury goods – and a lot of the momentum is lead by China.
According to IBISWorld, around 30 percent of retail industry revenue will come from tourists in 2017/18, led by the rising middle class in China. Tourism Research Australia has found that China will soon overtake New Zealand as the largest source of international visitors to the country, and in the year ending September 2017, Chinese tourists spent over $10.3 billion in Australian retail.
