iGeneration is the newest demographic
Tired of marketing to Gen Y? The Australian Bureau of Statistics has identified the next demographic – iGeneration.
According to today’s SMH, the ABS is applying the iGeneration label to those under 20 – the first group that has no memory of life without the Internet.
The classification has sprung from the results of the 2006 census. The statisticians draw up the generations as:
- 0-19 iGeneration
- 20-39 Generation X and Generation Y
- 40-59 Baby Boomers
- 60-79 Lucky
- 80+ Oldest
Meanwhile, The Australian reports that Gen X and Y is the best educated generation ever.
Whats funny here is the shifting of the Boomer age. Boomers were originally the people born within 15 years of the end of WW2. 1945-1960 (ie. My parents). Gen X came after that with people born in 60’s and 70’s. (ie. Me).
Suddenly it seems my parents are no longer Boomers (news to them I suspect) and I start to scrape into being a Boomer (no thx).
Also this iGen demo ties in neatly with what I said about my kids media consumption http://tinyurl.com/7paqhb and what Zac Martin has been saying http://tinyurl.com/7rpadm (ha, cheap plugs for us bloggers)
Somewhat scarily, this classifies me as an iGen.
At least it has an “official” name in Australia now.
Zac
I like to think of you as iZac.
Zac, I guess that is the end of you on the Gen Y podcast?
Sorry mate time to back your bags and head over to Habbo Hotel and hang out with all the rest of your iGen friends. 😉
I’m 18 and I wasn’t aware of the internet till I was 11. Behind the times I guess?
