20% of local newsrooms earn less than $50,000

One-fifth of Australia’s local and independent news organisations brought in less than $50,000 in revenue in the last financial year, with volunteers making up the bulk of workers.

This is according to a members survey of the Local and Independent News Association (LINA), who crunched the numbers for 77 publishers that collectively operate 139 news services. 27% of publishers in LINA run multiple newsrooms or publications.

Times are tough. Out the 74 publishers that provided their financial data, 15 of these earned less than $50,000 in revenue – over 20%.
