2UE’s David Oldfield suspended over asylum seeker gaffe
Talk back radio station 2UE has stood down fill-in drive time presenter David Oldfield after just three shifts following comments he made about asylum seekers.
Oldfield was today forced to apologise on air for his comments during his show yesterday when he said the electric fence at the asylum seeker detention centre in Christmas Island should be turned on.
The One Nation co-founder was filling in for regular drivetime presenters The Two Murrays who are on annual leave. Oldfield was scheduled to take the drive time seat this week and then move onto to another time slot as a fill in.
Tim McDermott, 2UE general manger told Mumbrella: “We’ve suspended him from today in light of his comments yesterday. We do plan to use him again but we needed to take a stance and he has apologised for his comments.”
I’ll bet he doesn’t TWIT about it.
Dunno that it’s a “gaffe”; that would imply an unwitting error, whereas this is just the man speaking his (tiny) mind.
He was talking about frying and barbecuing fellow human beings.
Totally unacceptable.
I liked David’s comments, he wasn’t frightened of political correctness, its showing the Australian larkinisim which is dying through political correctness and multiculturalism. Go David!!!!

ohh David. He’s just having a go! Poor aussie batterer. I enjoy listening to him and was wondering what station he will end up on. He needs to get off these old winging bag stations and find a FM station where he can use his comments in a format that works for that median . Don’t worry his like “where’s wally” he will turn up again.
Have really enjoyed you stint on 2UE. If there is an electric fence…why?? I say turn it on and if there is anyone who want’s to scale it so be it. Not our concern…their choice…’burn or barbcue ‘ probably not a great way of putting details for these illegals so what!.

Good riddance I say. And I hope 2ue don’t let him back on-air as an announcer. it would seriously hurt their corporate image. Test the guy out with intelligent, and some intellectual listeners, and you’ll soon realise that he has absolutely no idea what he’s talking about at all.

The only thing that I’ve heard that’s defamatory are the mistruths he’s spreading about asylum seekers. Around 90% of these boat people are found to be genuine refugees, not ‘lunch shoppers’
So let me get this straight … a radio station hires the co-founder of One Nation and is then shocked when he says something stupid? Well, duh!

David O was just doing what he does best – being a fucking idiot. Surely 2UE would’ve picked that up in the interview or when doing a background check on his stint at 2GB and… politics…
Pity the native folks didn’t have a few of those fences strategically positioned around the place before 1788…

David O did a great job of grilling the shadow minister, and trying to get a real answer unlike many journo’s. The fry/bbq was a minor exaggeration on a ‘hot’ topic. Alan jones says worse than this. Go David.

And Bev, get out your cables and electrical leads and start building an electric fence at all the international airports – after all 96% of illegal immigrants arrive by plane. It’s just that it makes for less sensational media coverage and lousy photos and video grabs.
David Oldfield was sacked by 2GB because they had numerous people in high places telling management that if this guy hung around it would cause more trouble for the station in the future. 2UE have now picked him up and have taken him on ‘worts and all’ and in doing so have taken a chance. Sure he may have had an audience to begin with, but don’t forget he was carrying the majority of the listeners who listen to Alan Jones and stay tuned in across the day and the night. I don’t care what anyone says, but David Oldfield DOES NOT carry many listeners on his own. So while he was going around being an extremist and painting himself into a corner, numerous people in high places were complaining and causing headaches for management. So 2UE should watch out, because not all publicity is good publicity, as in this case, Oldfield’s dangerous views will surely cause angst and perpetuate hatred in the community. This is why people such as himself shouldn’t be anywhere near a microphone, and should be destined for the whacko extremists corner of the local mental institution. And hopefully the high electric fences of which he talks about should keep the ‘real’ dangerous people, such as himself, INSIDE.

I think it was more of satirical as we are all upset with these cue jumpers.I’m pretty sure that if david was all nice as pie it wouldn’t be interesting.The man just spoke his mind perhaps didn’t use the right words.We are all human otherwise we would be robots.You’ve got to listen to david & you will see he is one of the nicest people you could meet.The media just beats things up sometimes.He has apologised i wish him all the best!
