Blade Runner 2049 dominates box office on opening weekend

The long awaited sequel to sci-fi classic Blade Runner dominated the weekend box office in Australia, grossing $4,528,430 across 498 screens.

Blade Runner 2049 pushed last week’s winner – Fox’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle – into second place with $1,986,637 on 373 screens, data from the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australian revealed. Kingsman has grossed $15,933,083 since its opening.

School holidays saw the Emoji Movie, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie and Lego Ninjago all staying in the top five with takings of $1,711,503, $1,434,221 and $899,358 respectively

Warner Brothers’ IT dropped out of the top five list, finishing sixth with $771,732 across 251 screens. Since the Stephen King inspired horror movie premiered, it has grossed a total of $22,769,908 in Australian cinemas.
