ARIA Charts: The song of the summer hits #1… just in time for winter
Every few years, a song comes along that captures the zeitgeist for a multitude of reasons. It usually comes out to coincide with the end of the US school year, and publications race to breathlessly declared it the ‘Song Of The Summer.’ This week’s ARIA #1 is such a song.
Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso has knocked Taylor Swift and Post Malone from pole position this week — which is an achievable in itself — with Australians clearly California Dreamin’ as the cold weather sets in. This song is a perfect lightning-in-a-bottle moment, with its over-saturated beach-Barbie clip, a touch of late ’90s Mariah Carey in the production, and a few viral-ready lyrics, such as the breezy kiss-off: “I’m working late, ‘cos I’m a singer.” No further explanation is required, or offered.
Last week’s number one, Fortnight, by Taylor Swift and Post Malone, has fallen to #4, while Million Dollar Baby from new hip hop hopeful Tommy Richman has leaped from #33 to #2 – mirroring its #2 debut in the States. Shaboozey’s A Bar Song remains at #3.
Meanwhile Kendrick Lamar’s mean-spirited ‘beef’ with Drake has seen him land two tracks in the top 10, with #8 Euphoria and #9 Not Like Us both being ugly attacks on the Canadian rapper.

Don’t worry though, Taylor’s Tortured Poets Department remains on top of the albums chart, holding off a strong debut from Dua Lipa, whose Radical Optimism debuted at #2.
Sia’s Reasonable Woman was the other strong debut album this week, entering at #14.
News of a Billie Eilish tour has sent her 2019 album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (an album title only a stoned teenager could conjure), back into the charts at #20, with both 2021 album Happier Than Ever, and Don’t Smile At Me (actually a 2017 EP) also re-entering, at #37 and #49, respectively.
Likewise, Kendrick Lamar’s aforementioned tiff has seen his 2017 opus Damn re-enter at #30, and his 2012 breakthrough album Good Kid, M.A.D.D City back in at #48.

Can someone please explain what is a “Unit”. Is it a physical sale, a downloaded sale, a digital play, a radio play. etc.

This is amazing. I didn’t even know “charts” existed any more.. What’s a “number 1 single” in 2024 anyway? It’s not like people buy them..
