Austereo cleans up Kyle & Jackie O website

Hmmm – I wonder if Citibank, Amex, BiC and WW realise they are on that website?
Or have their respective agencies just bought them a “package”?

I know it’s awful to think about, but that website would be receiving a considerable increase in traffic and the Fairfax network would be rubbing their hands together.

I can’t imagine American companies like American Express, Weight Watchers and Citibank will want to be associated with a radio station that uses children’s sex lives for adult entertainment.

This is going to get interesting.

I read a Twitter posting from Mia Freedman which made a lot of sense to me; maybe Kyle has refused to change the way he broadcasts, ie he won’t use the 7 second delay in future and so has refused to go on air. There is no suspension, just an irate Kyle…

Hmmm. Didn’t know Fairfax sold the ads, but what a funny coincidence on that on the day the story went ballistic in every other paper and media, the SMH completely ignored it – although online followed it all day. Perhaps it’s just the editor’s skewed news judgement.

What we have experienced in society over the last 12 months or so is a rejection of all things excessive (greedy financiers etc) that have wrought havoc on all our lives. People are sick of this type of offensive behaivour and Kyle and Jackie O are no exception – just in a different sector.

I’m sure the agencies that manage those clients, or the clients themselves, have just bought advertising via premium networks or extremely cheap run-of campaigns with Fairfax. I think this should really drive home the fact that buying low CPM inventory might seem like an easy way to increase your reach but of those people you reach only one in ten is your target demographic, a huge waste of valuable ad spend!

Kel, I mostly agree with you. I think the furore surrounding the lie detector is ridiculous. Nobody has said anything in the past. Mothers have had their troubled teens on before asking about drugs & sex & I didnt hear any complaints. I was listening to the show & I believe that Kyle did sound panicked & was trying to help the girl out as he did when a previous question on whether she wagged school indicated she lied when she said she hadn’t. Kyle asked her if she had ever pretended to be sick to miss school and she said yes she had. The operator said that this would be why the machine would say she was lying. If anyone is at fault it would be the mother who was aware of the situation. As a parent I understand her angst & worry about a rebellious teenager and drugs,STD’s, unwanted teenage pregnancy etc but I could not imagine one of my kids doing a lie detector against their will. I would not even be able to get one of my kids in the car to do a lie detector test.. You can’t make the person say anything if they don’t want too!
I think that niw to protect themselves they need to have a minimum age limit

i think that what kyile did was wrong but the mum that took her kid there should be blamed to coz i belive that she would have know what was going to happen and that she should really look at her self and the girl didnt have to answer and the network could have cut it out before it was aired and they didnt which was wrong of them i dont think that kylie should be taking all the blame as the mother should take some off the blame and the people that run the show as they didnt stop it i still like kylie and i think that ppl should stop and get over it as they have spoken about sex and stuff before and he didnt know that she would say that

The Kyle and Jackie O show has been a fantastic forum over the years for troubled teens, mothers in desperation, families who need help, kids with cancer etc and they have all been helped via the program whether it has been (and not limited to)money, councelling or advice.

The airing and discussion of these issues give other people suffering from the same issues hope and inspiration, they no longer feel alone. Whilst airing these issues Kyle and Jackie O show their compassion for the person involved in the segment and set a fantastic example for our young ones.

For those of us, including myself who don’t have any life issues, the program provided a great insight into the lives of these people and the issues which they face, I have learned a lot from the show and I can now sympathise and possibly help anyone who I cross paths with who suffer from the same issues.

Even though the Kyle and Jackie O show will be back on air at 2DayFM within a week the forum for discussion and resolution of these issues will be lost.

For each person who commits suicide or looses their child because they have lost the only forum they feel comfortable in discussing their issues we can thank the likes of Mumbrella, The Punch and Naked Communications.

You use situations like these as Vehicles for your frustrations and emtions and I believe Karma will come round one day and it will be their child, mother, sister, friend neighbour who will be affected.

But asking a minor (that’s an under-age girl Sharon) who is strapped to a lie-detector about her sexual history isn’t just wrong, it’s skirting the legal (which is why the police and DOCS are investigating)

Let’s hope Rod that Kyle isn’t the guy interviewing one of your loved ones? Do you think the correct airing for personal, deep-seated emotional issues is a national radio show? Wake up! – this is the clarion call that the advertising industry needs to sort itself out (well done on Qantas and Optus for pulling their advertising and for Idol for dropping this poor excuse of a radio presenter).

Yes, thank you Rod from Austereo and sharon sandilands from Bogan High for the insightful rationales.
It was great to see Kyle’s kindness and love for fellow humans on show when a girl told him she’d been raped on air and he wisely smoothed it over by asking her if that was her only sexual experience. We don’t hear anything further from this wonderful human being until Jackie O interrupts the segment, and suddenly the wonderfully caring Kyle decides perhaps it might be time to show some indication of concern, but unable to come up with his own he just densely repeats Jackie O’s offer of counselling.
24 hours later, in between ski runs in New Zealand while a young rape victim and her seriously screwed up mother become the subject of national public humiliation, the benevolent Ghandi-esque Kyle writes a blog claiming the media has attacked him unfairly and asking what would anyone else have done?
I can’t answer that because I would never consider placing a young girl on a lie detector and having her mother quiz her about her sex life on radio a good idea, so never would have been in that situation. I can say for certain that should anyone tell me they have been raped, no matter how shocked and astonished and stressed out and freaked and surprised I might have been, the next words to come out of my mouth would never have been “Right… and is that your only experience?”
The media has not beat this up one iota, the facts are irrefutable and the only ones who have been duped are anybody who buys this guy’s bullshit arse-covering. Get a grip.

Have I been living on a completely different planet? I don’t listen to a lot of commercial radio, preferring Triple J and 702. I am occasionally annoyed by some presenters on Triple J who have a bit of a penchant for prank calls, but I put that down to being over the general age for their demographic. A lot of the humour is undergraduate and lacking sophistication, but then the target audience is under 25, so I suck it up. But for the most part, I listen to the radio for good new music, news and current affairs. That’s what I thought everybody did.

I had no idea that changing channels in the morning would expose me to people happily being subjected to degrading stunts without even the glimmer of any humorous content. And subjecting their children to them for their own inexplicable reasons.

The idea of the polygraph test certainly doesn’t thrill me, but I assumed that, except for this incident, it had been confined to consenting adults with no dignity. Surely this severely impinges on the civil rights of the minors involved. It certainly says a great deal about their relationships with their parents – if you feel the only way you can believe your child is to hook them up to a machine on national radio and ask them intimate and embarrassing questions, you have issues that are beyond the remit of much greater minds than Kyle and Jackie O.

For All those who think Kyle and Jackie O had no say or no idea what was
going to be said – WAKE UP. they new a mother was going to quiz her daughter about
sex, a 14 year old girl.. It should never have gotten to that stage and should not have been allowed to air. The mother is mostly to blame and to be honest a pathetic excuse for a mother if you ask me. But its all about ratings ratings ratings ratings. they new what they were doing and its back fired.. Austereo employee Sami Lukis was on ‘The Morning Show’ on Channel 7 today as a ‘commentator’ and when asked about the K & J controversy immediately launched into a pathetic rehearsed rant about the mother of the child and naturally not mentioning K & J at all.
Nice one Austereo for digging yourselves a bigger hole on a daily basis and nice one Sami for one of the worst pieces of acting I’ve seen all year!

We know this particular segment was wrong and it was admitted and realised SECONDS after the 14 year old made the comments, everyone makes bad mistakes and for a segment which has been running for 3 years a mistake was likely to happen. If you are on a program broadcasting live Sydney-wide surely you would be under a lot of pressure.

eyeswideopen – I assure you that people like this wouldn’t consider calling a counsellor, it is not an option, to them it is shameful to ask someone to “help” them with their life. Many people with these kinds of issues will go through their whole life without going near a counsellor. I guess if you’re not in their situation you won’t understand – They ask people who they consider “friends” and for a lot of people they also consider people on the radio their “Friends” because people like Kyle and Jackie O open up and have nothing to hide when they are in discussion.

to anon – I am not far from reality at all, I have lived in a mix of Regional areas and City areas and still regularly travel between them both. I have friends who are bogans and some have kids and some don’t, some struggle every day with issues, on the other hand I have friends in Sydney who are very well-off, I also had regular visits from someone from the hostel down the road at Rozelle – was in an institution for most of his teens and 20’s. I am probably closer to reality than you’ll ever get.

It’s people like you anon, who make decisions based on emotion and generic “Values” you have learned from your family and values you learned whilst watching television but you fail to see the full story and fail use LOGIC to calculate a correct opinion and outcome.

Of course it’s classified as “Entertainment” but the end outcomes of these segments are positive, both for the participant and the listener.

Adam Paull – You are another example of someone who fails to research the full story but comments based on emotion and attack.

I hope the way people conduct themselves is not the typical attitude and the way everyone is going in this Country, if it is, it’s very disappointing outcome – Unlike many here, people like Kyle Sandilands are positive and modern thinkers, and their ratings show for it. They find the positive aspects in every situation – Making the most of it (and in the case of a negative situation) do everything in their power to fix the situation. I find that very entertaining and very inspiring.

Still don’t get it? – In simpler terms:
If someone was kidnaped from a school during lunch time.

(1) Adam Paull (and other commenters on this site) would spend his week writing letters to the Dept of Education, spread hate, angst and negativity on forums and twitter. Ring up talkback radio stations and spread more negativity. Ring up all their friends and ask them to spread negativity about the place.

(2) Kyle Sandilands – Pay for tighter security or find a business who will donate security services.

Your minds are so flooded with hate, anger and negativity you are unable to make clear informed opinions and make decisions using logic to find a resolution to the problem at hand.

But I guess it clearly shows in the ratings, in the $4m pay packet and the nearing 400,000 twitter followers vs the 50,000 someone like Dave Hughes has who is supposed to be more liked in Australia according to the vocal minority.

If we all cleared our mind and started to think positive we would have a much better world to live in.

AGAIN – For those of you who don’t read things properly – I do think the segment was a mistake, but move on for gods sake.

I challenge people who think they can command and change the world via their blogs and those who comment on blogs to come out into the REAL WORLD and and see REAL issues and how the disadvantage deal with them.

Do what Kyle does and go see the disabled and kids with cancer or talk to the homeless… come out with me and we will do the same, I’ll organise a freelance camera operator, film it and place it on the blog for everyone to see and see how compassionate you are tawards the disadvantaged

But let me assure you, media programs that pray on exploitation for ratings are no place to encourage nor condone the community – no matter their background or whether they are in your words ‘bogan’ or ‘rich’ – to seek help. The real opportunity would be for programs like this, and yours via Out and About, to responsibly promote help seeking and positive messages of support.

Shit. Imagine a society where responsible reporting and positive promotion of the volunerable were the real ratings winner?

The only way this is to happen is for citizen journalists, bloggers, online communities and even forums and websites like this, to take a stand and say no we don’t condone this and expect better. Then maybe I and others wouldn’t have to deal with the inevitable fall out from issues like this.

anon – you are, like everyone else on here, using clichés such as “pray on exploitation for ratings” or (similar). It’s easy to use those sayings because they have meanings shaped by the common heard.. the heard who use stories they hear in the media to vent their built up anger.

Anyone who wishes to broadcast their issues on 2DayFM sign on the dotted line. No one is “exploited” or “Used” for ratings. They are not like the Chaser who will target people unwillingly, only those who CHOOSE to be on air are on air and they are more than aware what the outcome can be on Kyle’s program.

The particular issue on the show is generally exposed, discussed, debated and the general public is given an opportunity to comment and on every occasion they are offered free professional counselling which they probably (1) Couldn’t afford (2) Would never go to in the first place. Then to top it all off, the general public is educated on the issue and can make more informed choices in their future life and will probably avoid the same mistakes faced by the program guest.

The problem with some journalists, bloggers, online communities forums and websites (and yourself) is they never actually EVER achieve anything themselves, they watch everyone else trying to achieve and everyone trying to derive an outcome from their activities and when they slip up, they EXPLOIT them for ratings which we have seen over the last week. (eg. The Kyle and Jackie O show trying to help a mother who’s daughter may be taking drugs, smoking and selling herself….. what do they get in return? They are exploited by the media for their own satisfaction)

Take Matty Johns, someone who has put a smile on many a face, someone who is incredibly inspirational to young ones, some one who is successful and loved by millions around Australia has his life destroyed by a journalist looking for ratings.

People STILL continue to wonder why he earns $4m and they are earning some crappy wage working in the front of their computer tapping away some story, paying off their mortgage all their life.. It’s because he is trying to achieve a positive outcome while the keyboard jockey’s are trying to shoot everyone down with a shotgun trying to achieve a positive outcome.

Honestly, if I was unfortunate enough to have a child in hospital I wouldn’t let Sandilands and his lie detector anywhere near them. Personally I’d be amazed he’d make it past security.

And I don’t really see how just the two of us hitting the mean streets without Mr Sandilands as you propose has anything to do with validating your Saint Kyle fables. Maybe I’m miss-reading your post and you do indeed mean we’ll spend the night following his holiness around the ‘hood, saving lives, patting the unfortunates on the head and rescuing kittens from trees. If this is indeed the case, then count me in – sounds like a great night and would make for fascinating footage. The good news is that I run a television and video production business so I can even supply the crew.

Any chance I could speak with some of the managers at the institutions Kyle has visited? Perhaps you can give us a few instances of disadvantaged kiddies Kyle has personally helped. Do you have any anecdotes from radio callers who have benefited from Dr Kyle and Professor O?

Even if you can’t organise a night on the town with Kyle, answering the questions above will go a long way to boosting your credibility on this forum.

Optus never ended up announcing its so called withdrawal, did it?

As for the challenge of the real world? Anytime fella. I started working as a volunteer at 16 and haven’t stopped since. I have met people from all walks of life and the people that really care about the issues, just get on with helping those who need it. Some of mates become teachers others counsellors but you know not one off them started a production company called “King Kyle” and went on radio asking a Minor questions about sex whilst she was strapped to a lie-detector.

Question – are advertisers deserting the show because

– there’s an uproar and they’re being reactionary in order to solely protect themselves from the fallout
– they are making a statement against tacky, low rent, humiliating content that degrades guests and listeners

You’d hope it was the latter … but if that was the case what were the advertisers doing on a program like this to begin with? Kyle has form and this isn’t too far removed from what has been standard for 10+ years.

@ Curious – An interesting question but I think you’re on the money with the feeling that it’s the former not the latter.

Another interesting development here is the idea that Australian audiences, both radio and television, are starting to link advertisers to programming responsibility. In the US advertisers are seen more as “sponsoring” content and therefore have some kind of responsibility for programming, while here in Oz there has always seemed to me to be some kind of separation, which is one reason (apart from their huge population and more “militant” religious groups) why boycott threats get more traction in the States.

I may be reading it wrong, but I’m trying to think of another Australian example of a successful consumer driven campaign like it and I come up empty – can anyone remember one? I know there have be smaller ones initiated by religious/family groups over television programming like Californication, etc, but I don’t think any of them have ever successfully swayed an advertiser to withdraw ads.

Even at the height of controversies like “Doug Mulray’s Naughtiest Home Video Show”, nobody called for sponsors to be boycotted.

Is this an Australian first?

This is such a simple situation. A line has been crossed and Kyle and Jackie O needs to be sanctioned for what they have done. Whether you think Rod that their show have perpetuated for the betterment of society in the past; for that specific day they have crossed the line between what was right and what was proper.

Rod, people would not have been questioning the morality and rationality of what the show implies to the public, with reference to the contents of their show, if the issue that have arisen to the situation have not trickled a catalyst that lodged a concept to the masses that “Hey, something does not sound right!” – but it did.

With a certain action come a certain reaction; and this is the consequence for having done something that aligns listeners and the audience to that question of ethical boundaries being crossed.

Respect be gets respect; and surely this show has dislodged the sensitivity of a very sensitive issue.
