Australian Directors’ Guild Awards: Julia Leigh wins for Sleeping Beauty, Sydney Dogs and Cats Home is best directed TV ad
This evening’s Australian Directors’ Guild Awards saw Julia Leigh claim the best direction in a feature film gong for Sleeping Beauty.
Matthew Saville won two awards – for best direction in a TV mini series for Cloudstreet and best direction in a TV drama series for The Slap.
SBS series Go Back To Where You Came From, which has just won international acclaim at the Rose d’Or Festival in Switzerland, took the best direction of a documentary series award for Ivan O’Mahoney.

There was direction in this abomination?
‘Sleeping Beauty’ wins? Wow. Well, as they say “You’ve gotta be in it to win it”. And I guess no one else was “in it”.
Im finding it annoying that you’ve merged all your Encore film industry news into the Mumbrella blog — the film news seems to overhwlem everythgin else lately… As a media/advertising person I don;t mind the odd film item but really it has little relevance to most of us — especially atm when the film industry is so tiny. Hope you can reverse this.
So it was an abomination was it? Well it sure as hell spoke to me. Who gives a fuck about the direction. You’d have to be callous to care more about the ‘art’ than the dog’s life.
Dear ‘Dog Owner’,
I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure that the “abomination” to which ‘Hindley Street’ was referring was the stinker ‘Sleeping Beauty’.
I took it to be the direction in the embedded video due to its prominence in the report. I haven’t seen ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and it appears that may be my good fortune.
