Australian Press Council set to welcome bloggers
The Australian Press Council is hoping to attract bloggers and smaller publishers to sign up for the regulatory body, chairman Julian Disney has said.
“Certainly I would hope that a significant number of online-only publishers, including bloggers, will either join the council or acknowledge its standards and try to adhere to them,” Disney told the Mumbrella360 conference.
Disney was speaking on the panel on press regulation, where he was joined by Res Publica managing director Gabriel McDowell and ninemsn editor-in-chief Hal Crawford.
Disney pointed to comments by blogger Tim Dunlop on The Drum that suggested that bloggers could form “a loose association”, and said that this would make it easier for them to join the Australian Press Council.
The Budget lockup was excluding crikey for years. I wonder if Disney’s move could be the beginnings of some kind of rapprochement with the genre. Presumably the next logical move is that bloggers who register get seats in the privilege cube in parliament..
Sadly lodging a complaint with the adversarial, pedantic and very biased Australian Press Council is definitely not a picnic. In fact it is really harrowing, frustrating, exhausting and ultimately a complete waste of time. The APC is totally unaccountable, in no way independent, ignores its own code of conduct as a matter of rule and previously shared office space with one of the major newspapers, which funds it! The APC has consistently swept my legitimate complaints on public vilification and very long running systematic media misrepresentation and suppression under the carpet. And it has consistently refused to act on them let alone publish them!
The self protective APC does not publish the vast majority of complaints it receives and very rarely satisfactorily adjudicates them. That’s if the Council even bothers to hear the complainant. In fact the Council is still stone walling on my latest suppression and misrepresentation complaint dated 7 March 2013 on the political persecution of my son Jordan, a victim of systematic media suppression, severe school bullying, judicial corruption, police brutality and gross police misconduct in relation to the online article in the Albert and Logan News and Courier Mail Online on 19 February 2013 titled “Drama unfolds on day two of Logan summit.”

The public deserves much better and that’s why we urgently need a new depoliticised, truly independent, timely and accountable regulated statutory news media council, which is up to the job!
