Australia’s national AI plan is advertising’s wake-up call

The Australian Government has finally dropped its National AI Plan and on the surface it reads like a tidy tech roadmap. Look closer, though, and it is a pretty clear message to the industry: evolve now or quietly slide into irrelevance. Nick Hunter, CEO and ECD of Paper Moose argues the plan as it stands isn’t enough.

Artificial intelligence already flows through every corner of advertising, from insights and optimisation to the generation of final artwork and TVCs.

Up until now, the pace has been set by curious early adopters and a few brave marketers. The National AI Plan tries to supercharge this but doesn’t go far enough.

With $460m in investment, new access to public datasets and the launch of an AI Safety Institute, Australia has pressed fast forward but with an investment that reflects a drop in the ocean in comparison to most hyperscaler tech companies. We had the privilege of advising on parts of the Plan and it is clear the government wants industry to lift its game, but will this be enough?
