Batman v Superman gets second biggest opening of year despite critical condemnation

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice managed to take $13.156m on its opening weekend, the second biggest opening of the year in Australia, despite being hailed as a flop by most critics.

The latest DC Comics adaptation, which stars Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman, dominated the Easter weekend, opening on 594 screens, but failed to match Deadpool which took $14.9m on its opening weekend in February.

Globally, the film managed $420m, the fourth-biggest opening of all time behind the likes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Jurassic World. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, the sequel to the 2002 film, also opened over the weekend and managed just over $4m on 376 screens, knocking last week’s number one Zootopia into third.
