Bauer slammed for ‘cruel and callous treatment’ of staff
The media industry’s union, the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) has accused magazine publisher Bauer Media of being “cruel” and callous” with its staff.
The MEAA’s lashing of Bauer follows yesterday’s news that a further 60 people would lose their jobs in the merger between Bauer Media and Pacific Magazines. The large-scale gutting of jobs was in addition to the 70 jobs already axed less than one week ago.

Pacific Magazines staff were delivered into the jaws of the wolf by a management team that had stripped them of substantial redundancy entitlements just days before the sale was reported in the press.
Bauer is enacting predatory and ruthless capitalism at its worst, but the Pacific staff will always most despise the PacMags managers who sold them out, with the promise that there would be “NO REDUNDANCIES” after the EA agreement.
We know the names and they won’t be forgotten. Keep climbing that greasy corporate pole. You will fall hard soon enough.
Don’t forget about the time how the Cleo staff were treated…appalling!
It’s certainly cruel. Not something I’d wish on anyone.
This must be the first article i’ve read in the trade press that doesn’t repeat the phrase ‘The German!!!! Publisher’ repeatedly for effect.
I just feel sick reading this. I’ve worked for both Pac Mags and Bauer and loved my time at both. I worked with such a great group of women – fun, engaged, hard working. Truly heartbreaking for everyone.
So cruel.
Can understand why the staff feel so bitter and angry. It sounds like it was not handled well at all.
