Beauty and the Beast takes top spot at weekend box office

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast live action remake has taken first place at the weekend box office, bringing in $13.145m.

The film, starring Emma Watson, is a modern take on Disney’s original 1991 animated classic, which tells the story of Belle, a young woman who falls in love her captor, the Beast.

Beauty and the Beast has made $14.892m since its premiere on March 23.

Fox’s animated film The Boss Baby held second place over the weekend, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia report.

The comedy, which tells the story of a baby who wears a suit, and speaks like a corporate executive, managed to rake in $2.743m in its first weekend at box office, across 259 screens.

Life – the story of a six member crew on the International Space Station who discover extraterrestrial life on Mars – came in at third over the weekend, earning $1.548m at box office.

In fourth spot, Roadshow’s Power Rangers managed $1.354m at its first weekend box office.

Kong: Skull Island slipped from first to fifth place over the weekend, making a total of $1.098m, down from last week’s earnings of $3.133m.

The film has made $11.444m since its premiere.
