Bevan Shields steps down as Sydney Morning Herald editor
Bevan Shields has resigned as the editor of the Sydney Morning Herald, with the masthead’s chief reporter Jordan Baker to step up into the role.
Shields has been the Herald’s editor since 2021, taking over from former editor Lisa Davies.
He informed Herald staff in an email on Tuesday afternoon he has “decided to step aside”, saying he is “aware there has been some speculation about my future”. This follows speculation in The Australian over the weekend regarding Shields’ role.
Is he stepping aside or is it a strike?
Did he strike?
What are we calling it?
Unfortunately, he oversaw the downturn of a once-great paper – including some especially poor decisions editorially.
