Bondi massacre: The front pages

How Australia’s major print mastheads covered the Bondi massacre.

Yesterday, two men opened fire on a Jewish celebration at Bondi Beach, killing at least 15 people. The events unfolded from 6.45pm, with all five free-to-air TV operators covering the incident live within an hour of this.

The major mastheads also had to scramble to cover the news in a timely matter, bumping front-page stories, and using similar layouts and photos across publications. Below is how the morning newspapers covered the tragedy.

The Australia’s print edition differs from the online edition, which used the same close-up shot of one of the shooter, seen across every other News Corp masthead this morning.

Interestingly, the digital edition of The Australian has a different main photo, mirroring News Corp’s other mastheads. It also dedicates the entire page to the tragedy.

The AFR chose not to feature the gunmen on its cover, a decision made across all Nine papers.

The Sydney Morning Herald opted for ‘terror’ as opposed to ‘massacre’, as seen on The Age

The Age in Melbourne, included a scaled down version of the SMH cover shot on its front cover
