Claire Sutherland takes helm of mX Melbourne as Steve Acott focuses on paid content
News Ltd has appointed Claire Sutherland as the new editor of its Melbourne edition of mX and moved Steve Acott to lead its paid content push for the Herald Sun.
Sutherland was previously News Ltd’s deputy editor, national features.
Acott will become associate editor (paid content) of the HWT.
Both will report in to HWT editor-in-chief Phil Gardner.
News Ltd’s group editorial director, Campbell Reid, said: “Claire is a respected editor who will bring fresh ideas to her role as editor of mX. She inherits an incredibly successful newspaper.
“Under Steve’s editorship, mX’s distribution footprint in Melbourne has grown from 90,000 to 100,000 copies a day.”
Sutherland is a former Melbourne Press Club Quill Award young journalist of the year.
Acott’s brief will be to “help develop creative and unique content for heraldsun.com.au and other digital platforms.”
“lead its paid content push for the Sun Herald” — Sun Herald, or Herald Sun?
You’ve got ‘Sun Herald’ as Steve Acott’s new destination, but I suspect you meant the Herald Sun.
Us Mexicans will try not to hold it against you.
Is the Melbourne editor of mX still in charge of most of the content for each city’s editions?
Herald Sun, Tim….
Dammit. Haste vs speed… ta, now updated

Claire is news ltd’s national features deputy editor, not mx’s.
Be great to see how Clair impacts on the content. mX could be a juggernaut, such great numbers copies and readership wise but the current content is seriously lacking!!
Congrats Clair! Looking forward to seeing what you get up to.
And Claire wasn’t previously mX’s deputy ed, she was dep ed of NewLtd’s national features dept which was established about two years ago.
Two very different things.
My apologies Amber.
My fault, although in my defence the announcement did put it slightly confusingly: “Claire Sutherland, currently deputy editor, national features, has been appointed editor of mX Melbourne.”
Now amended.
Cheers,
