Collingwood Football Club unveils new ad

I love it. The crowd is great and it looks like an ad that will work for Collingwood supporters.

I like the way this ad creates a bit of drama – not just a call to action

Nice to see a team put some effort into their ads – it creates something memorable.

Makes St Kilda’s ad look cute.

Is it true that Collingwood is regarded as the ‘bogan’ AFL side? I am a Sydneysider and from what I understand Demons are the “jolly good show” lot and Collingwood are the “oooow you gaaarn Sheila..” lot…?

What I want to know is whether they were able to muster a crowd that size, or whether their “army” was added digitally.

Sadly if Collingwood put out the call they could muster a crowd 10X that…. Nice spot. Very 300..

Collingwood: A broad demographic, encompassing everyone from feral bogans to slimy business types of dubious ethics.

Richmond: Feral toothless bogans, and their husbands.

Sydney Swans: Clueless theatre-goers.

Carlton: Wogs, Jews, Melbourne Underworld and both Malcolm Fraser and Robert Menzies.

Western Bulldogs: Poor people.

St Kilda: Angsty, arty types. Singers, artists, that kind of thing.

Essendon: Smarmy Cockheads, the lot of them.

Port Adelaide: Centrelink recipients.

West Coast Eagles: Cashed-up Perth arseholes.

Fremantle: Wish they were cashed-up Perth arseholes.

Melbourne: People who’s grandads were once Important People in Victoria.

Geelong: Country hicks.

Greater Western Sydney: No-one yet.

Adelaide: 50,000 people just like Lleyton Hewitt, his wife, his mum and his dad.

Brisbane: Clueless theatre-goers.

Gold Coast: No idea.

North Melbourne: 58 ranga’s, six old ladies and some bloke called Reg.

Hawthorn: Comfortable, successful, high profile types. Think Jeff Kennett and Sean Cummins.

They can’t be Collingwood supporters – they still have their front teeth! Well, most of them have.

Doesn’t look like Collingwood is pitching to female AFL fans; it’s a blokey ad and misses the point that half the fan base of AFL (unlike other codes) is actually female. Collingwood Fail.

Really Walter? What an insight! How about instead of pitching to female fans they just make a statement about the club and what it stands for – then whoever wants to be a part of it can choose to do so – be they male, female, transgender, pre op, post op, or otherwise.

The only thing you need to understand about Collingwood is that you should hate them.

Walter… Female Collingwood fans are blokey. I’m sure they will connect with this ad just fine!

I hate to say this (as they’ve beaten us in Grand Finals) but I think the ad is brilliant. They are an intimidating team and an intimidating club. They are either the best or second best team in the league yet they strangely own the underdog status, all their strength comes through adversity and they are the only team that inspires derision and attack from every other team’s supporters. Supporters are far more inclined to pledge their allegiance to the club via membership than any other team. So if you support them, there is strength in numbers, therefore you join forces with fellow supporters as you know everyone hates you. No other team has the relationship with its supporters that Collingwood has and this is a great way to strengthen what is already a very solid proposition. They are one club that gets it right off the field and usually on the field as well. The club’s intimacy with, and appreciation of, its supporters is second-to-none in AFL.
