Easy – tape them to the board.
Not as wacky as it sounds – there are a number of surfing dogs in Hawaii. You see them quite often out in the easy breaking waves at Waikiki, sitting on the nose of their owners’ longboards going for a cruise. Last year there was a guy out there with a duck – or some sort of water fowl at least. Whenever he wiped out, which wasn’t often, the duck would simply fly over the back of the wave where it would wait for him to come and pick it up.
