‘We have created our own monster’: GroupM boss on media’s role in Donald Trump election
Media owners and media agencies need to think about their public responsibilities in both reporting and investing advertisers money in the wake of Donald Trump’s election as President of the USA, the head of the world’s biggest media buyer has said.
Asked if the media is responsible for the rise of the controversial reality TV star, Irwin Gotlieb, global head of GroupM responded: “We are all complicit in the mess we’ve created.”
“As the guys who dole out clients’ money, we ensure it gets spent on media that attracts audiences. Media owners chase the story that creates the most attention. We create our own monsters, and we have to deal with that,” he told the CASBAA Convention in Macau.
I’m surprised Trump didn’t thank the media for the hundreds of billions of value in media mentions he received. The old adage seems to apply “There is no such thing as bad PR”.
Outlets like CNN, Huff Post, CNBC, CBS and ABC news only gave Trump coverage during the Republican primaries and that’s a major factor in why he won the nomination. Fpx News ironically tried to keep the Trump coverage at a minimum during the primaries, similar to their coverage of Ron Paul in 08.
Hillary and the DNC wanted Trump as the ‘easy’ opponent as her team thought an adversary like Cruz, Rubio or Bush would be more savvy during debates and in general more of a challenge.
So the left leaning media and the DNC can carry on as much as they want, but the fact is that they are in a huge part responsible for Trump’s election.
