Daily Mail Australia boss refocuses on number one news spot after split with Nine
The boss of the Daily Mail Australia has said the news site still aims to be number one in Australia despite conceding it is likely to take a short-term hit in traffic following its split with Nine.
The local arm of the British-based publisher has hit a ceiling at fourth place in the Nielsen online news rankings despite getting referral traffic from the Ninemsn news site as part of the joint-venture agreement with Nine Entertainment Co, which was terminated today.
Peter Holder managing director of Daily Mail Australia told Mumbrella: “We are not concerned even if there is a little bit of a blip – the road to success is always under construction.
Not alot of threat left in the top 5 now, only one really making move is News which strategics alignments. Nine Digital needs an overhall in my opinion, some fresh ideas and talent.
DM-AU wants to be the number one news site, so I guess that’s going to mean even more material copied from other news wesbites, lazily thrown together on the back of other journalists’ work or quickly cobbled from a few Tweets or Facebook posts. Looks like the race to the top now also means the race to the bottom.
Good move throwing off the anchor that is Nine.
Good Luck with that one, Pete and DMG. Aus is a small and very crowded news market place (much smaller than the other markets DMG operates in),, digital ad yields are going down the toilet and digital platforms (facebook, snapchat, google etc) are eating publishers’ lunch both in terms of audience and revenue. Even in the (unlikely)event you hit #1 for audience, making a profit will remain elusive.
NEC has really regressed into being a TV only operation. Happened pretty quickly.
