Daily Telegraph mock up of Mike Carlton as ‘Palestinian’ fleeing Gaza attack was originally image of Boston bombing victim
The image onto which The Daily Telegraph photoshopped the face of Mike Carlton along with a headscarf to make it look like a Palestinian man fleeing the bombing in Gaza was actually a photo of a Boston bombing victim, it has emerged.
The body for the image, which is being circulated on social media and shows a man with torn clothes, appears to have originally been sourced from an AP image featuring victim James Costello staggering away from the aftermath of the attack in the US in May 2013.
The Sydney tabloid had used it as part of extensive coverage of Carlton’s resignation from Fairfax after the commentator sent abusive tweets and emails to readers.
The image was first tweeted by the anonymous anti News Corp twitter account @TheMurdochTimes who was among a number of online users who then condemned the use of the picture. Comment is being sought from News Corp Australia and the Daily Telegraph.

I use the daily telegraph to line the bottom of my guinea pig cage. It’s the only thing it’s good for. I get it for free from my local Maccas.
I hope Mike Carlton has briefed his lawyers and will commence a defamation claim against the Tele with a big fat settlement. The Tele’s front page was outrageous.
Call me crazy but the head scarf photoshopped onto the Boston bombing victim’s head looks like it has been taken from a stock shot of Yasser Arafat – which probably makes it ‘nearly true’ and ‘kind of okay’ in the mind of the Daily Tele’s editor.

Just another reason the Daily Telegraph should be burnt to the ground and forgotten about forever. It’s gone from being a joke to being poisonous.
Maybe someone should ring round some of Fairfax’s advertisers and determine whether Carlton’s chastisement and threatened suspension was actually about his “response to criticism” or in fact the political leanings of some of Fairfax’s biggest advertisers.
Fingers crossed he gets picked up again soon (Guardian?) or there will be literally nothing to read in bed on a Saturday morning any more.

If any of you know the editor of the Tele, you will know that “cartoon” is not his style in any way at all.
You can be assured he was as disgusted as you were when he saw the offending piece. In addition, he would have been mortified that it got through the system.
It is clear none of you understand publishing a newspaper each day is a huge task. In fact, one could reasonably call each paper “The Daily Miracle”.
Try it some time and see if you can get so much right and so little wrong day after day after day. In the meantime, some mature and sensible comments would not go astray.

@ Bob: I don’t buy your defence of the Tele’s editor for one second. Under his editorship over the last 3 years, the Tele has become an extreme partisan comic spouting progaganda on a daily basis. Not to mention the bullying. And the weird never-ending Clover Moore bashing obsession. It’s an editorial style that should not be welcome in this country, and does nothing to further healthy debate.
Typical of the distasteful reporting of the Telegraph. I am inclined to cancel my SMH subscription because Mike Carlton’s column is no more.
I’m sure I am not the first to point this out but surely:
Carlton’s resignation only serves to prove the accuracy of the column: that it’s next to impossible for anyone to criticise the Israelis for what they’re up to in Gaza and elsewhere.
It’s pretty funny in its sick way. Whittaker and his drones devote far more time and energy to bucketing Carlton and the SMH than the Tele’s readers could possibly care about then proceed to shoot off it’s collective foot with an error of judge to rival that of the cartoon published with Carlton’s column. The difference is the SMH should know better. The Tele crew are too crass and clueless to know better.
