David Weisbrot resigns from APC due to ‘personal attacks’ following Carla McGrath scandal
The chair of the Australian Press Council, David Weisbrot has resigned after three years in the role.
Weisbrot said his departure was due to “persistent personal attacks” and “misinformation” about the Council’s appointment of Carla McGrath.
He reiterated that McGrath was appointed after a “fair and open process” and a vote by all of the Council.

The Australian just helping to prove that press self-‘regulation’ in this country is an utter failure. They have also forced out a council chair who was particularly publisher-friendly. Own goal.
“This resulted in backlash from the wider publishing community with The Australian announcing it would boycott any APC decisions made by, or involving, McGrath.”
I would challenge the description of The Australian as “the wider publishing community”. The Australian is the News Corp equivalent of Pravda, with a clear political agenda and an absolute determination to see that succeed, no matter the cost. Hardly surprising considering it’s place at the heart of an organisation that has still never truly apologised for the actions of its British arm over many years.
