Disney’s live action Aladdin debuts to top spot in weekend box office, taking $7.59m

Disney’s live action remake of Aladdin debuted to the top spot of the weekend’s box office, earning $7.59m across 578 screens.

The film is the latest in Disney’s series of live action remakes, following the release of Tim Burton’s Dumbo in April and leading into the new Lion King film which will be released in July. The new version of Aladdin stars Mena Massoud as the titular character, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine and Will Smith in the role of Genie.

Last week’s weekend box office winner, John Wick: Chapter Three, experienced a 32% drop from last weekend’s earnings, taking second place at the box office. The action thriller took in $2.8m over the weekend from 258 screens, making its running total in Australia $8.3m.
