Dr Karl reveals how helium nearly killed him live on television, as Hamish & Andy are criticised for doing same thing in radio prank call
Broadcaster Dr Karl Kruszelnicki has told how how he came within seconds of dying on the floor of a television studio while a cameraman urged him to keep quiet so he didn’t interrupt the show.
The incident came after an on-air segment on Australian breakfast television in which the science expert inhaled helium to raise the pitch of his voice.
Dr Karl described the incident to BBC radio listeners on Thursday night.
Why don’t we just keep all on-air talent strapped into their chairs in a studio covered in bubble wrap with no lights or sound? Because no matter what the jocks seem to do these days they come under fire for being irresponsible or poor role models. I understand that there are certain dangers doing this type of “stunt”, but this is less about sucking down helium and more about hypersensitive dingbats sucking the fun out of radio. Get it together.
Totally agree that great content requires some
risk, but this stunt can easily be done with electronically modifying voices without the need for using helium.
