Dynamic Duos: ‘We’ve often found ourselves finishing each other’s sentences’

In this week's Dynamic Duos, managing partners at Smith St, Marnie McKenzie and Amanda Isidro, reflect on their partnership, leadership styles, sharing dinner ideas, and finishing each other's sentences.

In Dynamic Duos, Mumbrella each week asks two colleagues with a professional and personal affiliation to share with readers the importance of workplace relationships in an increasingly hybridised world of work.

Marnie McKenzie:

I met Amanda during the interview process, and from the very start, we just clicked. It was clear we had the same vision for the team, the same approach to leadership, and a shared understanding of what needed to be done.

Even though we had never worked together before, it felt like we had known each other for years. We discovered we had both worked at some of the same agencies but never crossed paths until this moment – when everything just fell into place. We talk every day, whether it’s about work or just life, and often share our daily dinner ideas since we both have two boys.

On our commutes home, we’re still in sync, finishing each other’s sentences and sharing stories from the day. There’s a natural rhythm to how we manage the team together, and it’s easy because we both understand each other so well.

It’s that rare kind of partnership where everything feels effortless and aligned, and it’s been an incredible experience working alongside someone who feels like a long-time friend and colleague from the very first day.

Amanda Isidro:

I first met Marnie during the interview process, and from the start, there was an instant connection. We immediately bonded over a shared vision for the team and a clear understanding of what was required to move things forward.

It was one of those rare moments where we were completely aligned in our approach, and it felt like we were already working together seamlessly. We talked every day, and even on our commutes home, we’d continue to bounce ideas off each other – always in sync. We’ve often found ourselves finishing each other’s sentences, which is a testament to how in tune we are.

Although we’ve never worked together before, it honestly feels like we’ve known each other for years. It turns out, we’ve worked at a few of the same agencies in the past, but somehow our paths never crossed – until now. The connection is immediate and effortless, and it’s been an incredible partnership ever since.

Marnie on Amanda:

Most memorable moment with Amanda: Amanda won the DDB bake off with her Lemon Italian biscuits that had ingredients in them that I had never heard of.

Best word to describe herCalm – nothing seems to rattle her!

Most annoying habit or endearing behaviour she has: Amanda’s ability to have dinner sorted for the week by Monday.

Amanda on Marnie:

Most memorable moment with Marnie: One of the most memorable moments that truly captures Marnie’s character was when she drove 8 hours on a scorching 40-degree day to pick up her son from a festival. He was stranded due to bushfires in the area, and without hesitation, Marnie dropped everything to make sure he was safe and brought him home.

That scenario perfectly exemplifies her unwavering willingness to help those she cares about, no matter the circumstances. It’s just one of many instances where her kindness, loyalty, and deep sense of responsibility shine through – she’s always there for others, no matter what

Best word to describe her Even though it’s two words, Marnie is well connected. She knows everyone! And has lots of stories to share.

Most annoying habit or endearing behaviour she has: Her love (obsession) of Collingwood and her amazing talent of wearing sky high heels every day of the week.
