Eddie McGuire meets with Seven weeks after slamming the network on live TV

Eddie McGuire has reportedly taken a meeting with Seven’s news boss Anthony De Ceglie, as rumours fly that McGuire will defect to the network in order to host a late night talk show.

According to the Australian Financial Review, the meeting happened last week while De Ceglie was in Melbourne to deliver a speech to the Press Club, where he called for the Albanese government to abolish the “archaic” broadcast spectrum fees the networks pay.

He also explained the “no dickheads policy” he plans to bring to Seven’s beleaguered newsrooms, inspired by Ryan Stokes’ ten-point leadership philosophy.

The meeting apparently took place at McGuire’s Jam TV production offices in Toorak, where De Ceglie was spotted.

As the AFR reported: “Jam TV does do some work for Seven so this is unsurprising. But the visit came amidst feverish speculation De Ceglie wants to hire McGuire to host a late-night talk show. The rumours, we’re told, are true. They were meeting in part to discuss the prospect.”

This move would be surprising, given the public spray McGuire gave Seven on live television in late September, during the lead up to the AFL Grand Final.

During a live Today cross, McGuire was asked about Nine’s Footy Classified hosts Kane Cornes, Caroline Wilson and Craig Hutchison defecting to Seven, to which he said, “end of the season, you get rid of the list-cloggers and you move the new superstars in,” before taking aim at Seven, sarcastically saying: “It’s great that Channel Copycat is just taking something we’ve done for 18 years and putting it on air.

“So that’s okay. While they’re doing that, we’ll come up with something fresh, new and exciting for next year and do what we always do.”

A late night talk show would certainly be fresh, new, and exciting. Plus, nobody’s pulled it off successfully since Rove Live wrapped in 2009.
