Australians’ trust in media at an all time low finds Edelman’s ‘Trust Barometer’
Trust in media has continued to see a steady decline for Australia in the era of social media influence and fake news, with Edelman’s annual global Trust Barometer revealing Australia’s key institutions – media, business, government and NGO’s – are amongst the least trusted in the world.
According to the global report, only 31% of people trust the media, meaning Australia has the second lowest trust in media globally, finishing just in front of Turkey where only 30% trust the media.
By just adding the word “social” you could have an accurate headline
I wonder if we can relate the distrust to the fact that a main proportion of media in Australia is owned by Murdoch?
The increase in my political knowledge is directly linked to the decrease in my trust of mainstream media, and an under pressure ABC, as well as several previously trusted and respected commentators and journalists. I often say it’s like we’ve ‘broken up’ such is the relationship I developed with these trusted commentators.
So I wonder if this is partly reflected in these figures? Those who are politically less informed don’t realise the bias and agenda in our news media and the false narratives which are created for political and other purposes. As an example, the myth that the Liberal Party are the ‘better economic managers’ is factually incorrect but has been a long fostered mistruth created through the mainstream media narrative. Overall – the mismatch between what’s really going on in politics compared to what’s reported is often causing us to vote against our own best interests. In one of the most concentrated media ownership landscapes in the world, one of a handful of countries which has compulsory voting, and a hobbled sub-standard internet where some will find it difficult to access diverse media voices, this should concern us all.
