Fake it ‘til you make it… as an executive producer
In a feature that first appeared in Encore, The Morning Show’s Sarah Stinson tells us how to bluff it as a TV executive producer.
What do executive producers actually do?
On paper, I’m the final word for both the business and creative decisions on The Morning Show. In practice, that means being a master negotiator, split-second decision maker, business wheeler and dealer, and slightly eccentric creative genius. Think – Ari Gold meets Andy Warhol… in tap shoes.
What makes a good executive producer?
What a great sense of humour she has.. I am sure that’s the number 1 pre-requisite!
Have to agree with Anne, really get the sense of humour and fun Sarah has, its a true mark of self confidence if you can poke fun at yourself. I think everyone has the “inflated sense of ability hiding underlying insecurity”, people are too worried about being “found out”.
Its people who dont entertain that fear too much who get ahead!
I think this is one of those it looks easier than it actually is jobs.
I’m not a Director but I recently put together a short 30 second Valentines Video to send to our clients http://youtu.be/IfadG_l_dh4 and without our Director who doubles as executive producer actually making decisions (even though I had a clear creative vision) we would still be working on it.
Hats off to those who can do this well
