Family films Inside Out and Minions top box office ahead of second instalment of Magic Mike

Disney Pixar’s Inside Out leapfrogged Minions and Terminator: Genisys as it topped the local box office with takings of $4.313m across 452 screens at the weekend.

The performance of the 3D animated family comedy drama, which took total takings to more than $25m, kept male stripper film Magic Mike Xxl off the top spot in its opening weekend.

The Channing Tatum vehicle drew $4.1m across 401 screens on its opening weekend as the third biggest movie of the week, behind Minions in second spot with takings of $4.186m, which lifted total ticket sales to $27.8m as school holidays came to a close.
