Independence Day: Resurgence flops at box office finishing behind Finding Dory

The return of Independence Day to the theatres with the Resurgence sequel failed to excite audiences over the weekend, with the highly-promoted blockbuster managing just $4.831m on 537 screens on its opening.

The film was well behind animated adventure Finding Dory, which drew $7.547m on its second weekend on 543 screens after setting a new record for an animated film on its opening weekend, bringing its total box office to $20.729m so far.

Globally, Independence Day: Resurgence, which pits an Earth without Will Smith against a return of the aliens, looks set to be an expensive flop achieving similar results in key markets including the US. The film cost an estimated US$165m to make.
