Four new ‘slow’ programs, Mastermind and a new brand positioning for SBS in 2019
SBS has re-positioned itself as a brand with ‘a world of difference’, announced a month of slow TV, new local drama and the launch of an Australian version of popular UK gameshow Mastermind at its 2019 upfronts.
At the upfronts in Sydney yesterday, SBS revealed four new slow TV events will run through January. It also announced Scott Cam, Kurt Furnley, Rodger Corser and Casey Donovan as the stars of Who Do You Think You Are?, along with 15 scripted and non scripted short form productions for SBS On Demand.
The spotlight was also placed on Australian women’s sport, particularly the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, W-League, and WNBL.
Well done SBS, yet again offering a lot more local content of a quality nature. Just as well the Liberals gave Fox all of the funding for broadcasting women’s sport, would hate to see it go to waste on a public broadcaster that’s watched by the public.
I used to really enjoy SBS and it’s balanced, open programming. It gave both sides of the picture without degrading either, leaving the viewers to make up their own minds. Sadly now, the programming has an obvious political & social agenda and has become unwatchable. Nice try SBS, but it’s too late. You traded balance for ballots.
Sad that marketing types have taken over SBS.
Sadly SBS does not provide a ‘distinct proposition’ trying so badly to be a clone of the commercials. Time this try-hard commercial network was closed down or it returns to it charter roots with full Govt funding minus advertising. The minute SBS started interupting programs and went fully commercial, they lost me. And don’t give me the tripe about only running 5 minutes of ads per hour. When you count in the promo, merch, contra and CSA spots, it is more like 10 to 15 minutes per hour, too much clutter for my liking.
Dear SBS, I have enjoyed letters and numbers while getting an evening meal for years, despite the repeats. I I do not find the endless UK vets doing complicated and expensive surgery on pets an adequate substitute.
