Go Back To Where You Came From pulls in highest ratings of 2012 for SBS
The return of SBS’s hit series of Go Back To Where You Came From has pulled in the biggest audience for the broadcaster this year.
The documentary, which this year takes six prominent Australians on the path of a refugee’s journey to Australia from their war torn country, rated 752,000 across the five metro markets according to preliminary ratings from OzTam.
The first of three episodes, this year’s debut is up 44% on last year’s, which rated 524,000.
Last year’s series gained momentum, with the final episode receiving 600,000 viewers and ranking 19th for the night.
Made bitchy comments previously about the quality of “celebrity” on this show.
Putting Aussie-dicks into harrowing situations made it even better. Great program.
GBTWYCF is a great show and full marks for introducing ‘celebrities’ without ruining the format.
With three nights of this I wonder if 10 will get pushed into 5th!
Bloody brilliant! It was an emotional roller coaster ride for a whole hour.
Captivating stuff.
Absolute ripper of a program. Well done to SBS.
Brilliant again, the twitter hash is a must if you’re following this…
Brilliant program & choice of people to take part. I have to give cudos to the hard-line right wingers for stepping up – they knew what they were getting into both politically and via public opinion and were still ready to step into the firing line. Having Peter Reith meet one of the people that were sent home from the Tampa in Afghanistan & hear his story was a stroke of pure genius. I will be fascinated to watch the remaining episodes to see if it had any effect on their thinking. It has already had a profound effect on my teenager – she was still talking about the program this morning and the plight of refugees (and the entrenched lack of human empathy by some of the people on the show). Well done SBS! Here’s hoping you nudge out some of the other “reality” shows on the other stations.
Why would you want to watch a documentary about the very people we are trying to stop getting here by boat?
Peter Reith … thinking. There’s two words you don’t often see in the same sentence.
Daniel, with that attitude, better them than you.
Hope there will be a sequel to Go Back To Where You Came From as there is plenty to tell:

The ABC should look into it.
To me-it showed how povety and corruption is controlled by those in power ,they do not have the interests of their people at heart ,to let babies and little children die from starvation you would have to be a monster, the fate of the Somalia people and other countries living in thousands of make shift tents is unbelievable and a disgrace to the government of those countries,we in Australia are not responsible for the povety and neglect that occurs ,nor are -we responsible for the decisions and choices of those who decide to come by boat to our shores-my heart goes out to those who risk their own and their families lives,my questions are-why are they mainly -men?who is looking after their families?how do they manage when the father has gone?if they are escaping persecution -why do they bypass other countries to get here?if they are so -poor where do they get the large amount of money to pay the boat -smugglers?and once settled – want their own culture and laws ?
