How Sunrise won its globe-trotting gamble
Despite Malcolm Turnbull’s ascension while its hosts were overseas, Sunrise’s big global broadcast has paid off, argues Mumbrella’s Tim Burrowes
Last Monday night, I thought that Seven had made a terrible mistake.
While Malcolm Turnbull was dramatically ousting Tony Abbott, the entire Sunrise team was flying away from Canberra at 900 kilometres an hour.
For Sunrise, there couldn’t have been a worse moment for a spill than on the second day of their five-city circumnavigation of the world.
This is calling it a win very early on. The percentages look great but do the absolute numbers vindicate the decision? What’s the projected tail of this in audience terms? Strategically they have to expect a response and if this is ongoing the financial and human cost will go up permanently without any change in the overall numbers of people watching.
You have to also account for lead in, in Breakie TV that’s generally what folks turn their TVs off on the night before… Seven was strong every night particularly after 7.30, the only exception being the Bachelor nights, but they were still ahead of Nine and TEN don’t offer a viable Breakfast TV option.
Stunning work. And how about a shoutout for all the producers who make this kind of stunt a reality.
Tim,
Could it be that you are dictating these stories? (Clever idea.)
Otherwise, this kind of typo seems unlikely.
“Somehow, I think they’ll be more to come from both sides.”
Hi Bucks,
It is an excellent idea. It would save all that pesky typing…. sadly not just yet though…
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella
“It’s easy to turn your nose up at breakfast television because to those outside, it can look like trite, lowest common denominator fare.”
It shits me when these morning show people go on OS adventures while the rest of us go off to work. It’s just rubbing our noses in it.
Funny how Melbourne always use to win for Sunrise, a very Melbourne station.
But Today over the years, gained a Melbourne audience.
In partner oar, ABC News Breakfast has taken a lot of the Melbourne audience (it is local there).
But for Seven, a network that struggles in Sydney these days with Nine winning 6om News and Melbourne having all Thais major sport, it’s good to see them win slightly with Sunrise, The Morning Show, X Factor & now 800 Words.
