If agencies were bands…
The other day I was chatting to the boss of a new agency that’s about to launch.
I asked her what she wanted her agency to stand for. If it was a band, which would the agency be, was my question.
Which then got me to thinking about which bands Australia’s existing agencies would represent. As I began to make notes, I began to realise that it doesn’t look good…
Starting relatively gently, BMF are U2 – hugely successful, but these days also somewhat corporate.
Love the Mitchells one.
Really interesting analysis and insight, which proves I am Elvis!
PJ & Duncan! Oh my god – flash backing to the early 90’s now 🙂 byker grove man….
M&C
I must confess I struggled on M&C Saatchi. Any suggestions?
The sweatshop boys?
Hangon, that’s petshop boys…
Great article Tim.
I can’t say I see us at bellamyhayden as Simon & Garfunkel…
I sit next to Phil and I reckon Pet Shop Boys would be nearer the mark…
Moon?
Beastie Boys? Are you making a comment about ill communication….
No Mike…it’s because you shop at Paul’s Boutique….
I’d say OMD were Joy Division with James Greet, then New Order with Mark Coad, now potentially could become Electronic (maybe they need a Johnny Marr to join them from another Smiths-like agency)
Speaking of, which agency would be the Smiths. (surely they’re a great enough band to be on the list!)
disclaimer re joy division – i meant that in a great band sense, not a dead tortured frontman sense
M&C. Hard one. What about Bananarama? Lots of pop but fading.
Milli Vanilli? I have a few suggestions…………
Really Tim….please proceed with the PR agencies and their band personalities!
Cool idea for an opinion piece. Nice!
360(CBA). The village (ditto), OneBarrackStreet (Voda), RedHouse (Westpac) all one hit wonders – all The Vapours. Do you think they knew they only had one hit in them when they came up with that name?
What about Singos?
Singo’s…Rage against the machine!
Very funny.
The Beatles aren’t there. In the mid 80s when Mojo & MDA merged I think it was Singo who said “It’s like The Beatles marrying the Post Office”
What about Whybins/TBWA? Where do they fit in?
Thanks Tim for a post full of the most valuable currency we have – the smile.
I think a better reference would be for Saatchi and Saatchi is INXS…all we need now is a reality show to find a new front man
who would be the genesis or power stations of agency land
Tim you’re a goose!
Lazza, many thks for your addendum though rather than Bernie and johnnie I d now have horgs and lee reforming as the Susan Boyle twins……not much to look at but quite impressive when they open their gobs.
So Tim is Molly and Mumbrella is Countdown?
leonard cohen is not a band. he’s a bloody legend.
M&C Hammer and tongs.
And JWC Tim? Be nice now…
Sorry for forgetting you, Rob.
I’m afraid I probably don’t know as much about you as I should. I guess the easy answer would be to focus on the fact that first leapt to mind.
Which would make you Zowie Bowie (son of a celebrated father also in the creative business, but now making his own way – have you seen Moon? V good…)
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella
Hey Tim,
Brilliant! I’ve been a fan from way back, but you outdid yourself with this one!
Keep up the great work Tim!
Jeff
OMD = New Order.
haha
