Is Sam De Brito good-looking, or merely attractive? Fairfax’s subs can’t decide
Fair to say that Fairfax columnist Sam De Brito is in a continuing fight against his debilitating allergy to modesty.
He wrote a splendid column at the weekend pondering the David Jones sexual harrassment issue before concluding it’s lucky that he’s so damned handsome, because the women that he hit on at work fortunately found him irresistible.
That, however, as regular readers of the All Men Are Liars Except Sam De Brito column will be aware, is relatively par for the course, but where it gets interesting is that Dr Mumbo happened to see the column twice – in Sydney’s Sun-Herald S section and also in Melbouune’s Sunday Age M section.
And it would appear that somebody’s been tampering with (or possibly toning down) his copy.
Sam De Brito is an arrogant and misogynistic jerk. Everyone knows that and it’s one of the reasons I can not read anything he writes.
I’m interested to see he rates a mention here – for a long time I have seen his smug face in the mag & found that alone a total turn-off from the column. I have never read a single word of it.
Glad to know my ability to read people’s faces is entirely accurate, at least in this case.

“Is Sam De Brito good-looking, or merely attractive?” Isn’t this the wrong way round? in other words, being attractive surely means more than being merely good looking?
As a straight male I’m unable to pass an opnion on either characteristic, but I can understand why many female readers might find him unatractive and self-absorbed. However, he probably reflects the attitudes, preferences and expectations of a significant number of men, and for this reason I sometimes find his column interesting even if I don’t necessarily agree with his opinions.
From an editorial point of view, changing such an important word seems out of line. Correcting grammar and improving readability is one thing, but changing the sense of the writer’s argument is quite another.

I find on this site there is constantly both the call for more humour in advertising, and bashing for any type of joke attempt because it may mean that the ad may not meet the artistic credibility of a top wankstain creative.
However more to Dr. Mumbo’s article, the Herald do this type of copy tampering all the time. Im pretty sure Sam wouldnt have read his M copy to see the change.
Maybe whats really funny is that Fairfax are paying Sam good money for his opinion drawcard in an attempt to draw readers in an unknown market, yet change his copy to suit their own means anyway.
OK Vicki, I don’t find Sam either attractive or good looking – but that’s my view of all males, so not sure what value that opinion has 🙂
I’m not sure if he is good looking or attractive, but then again like DF I don’t like guys either.

De Brito got you to read his column twice? Sounds like he’s earning his money or your find him attractive.
I’ve worked with Sam, he’s pretty fun to flirt with on the way to the kitchen.
Sam de Brito is also a novelist. His first novel, The Lost Boys, was a beautiful read, was well received and scored some glowing reviews from critics.
I quite like what Sam de Brito has to say a LOT better than Sam Brett yet she seems to have the higher blog on the age… plus he acutally engages with his bloggers/readers as opposed to the female Sam
