‘It’s not great at the moment’: Even Tim Minchin can’t get a show commissioned in this climate as he rules out Upright Season 3

The TV climate is so tough at the moment that even one of Australia’s favourite stars is struggling to get a show made.
Appearing on a special co-presents episode of Mumbrella’s one-on-one podcast series and The Plug podcast, the revered actor, writer and musician discussed a number of projects he is working on, which includes one he has finished writing.
“It’s a little bit ambitious… but it’s big, and it’s another vehicle for me and I’m really proud of it,” he told host Neil Griffiths.
“Right now we won’t go into what’s happening and to the streamers and stuff, but I’m not going to be able to get it made at the moment. I would have been able to get it made, like, four years ago, but the whole landscape’s changed and the investment funnels and what they’re looking for. It’s not, it’s not great at the moment, actually.”
One project that Minchin did get support for was the widely-acclaimed Foxtel series, Upright, which he co-wrote, co-directed and starred in alongside now House of the Dragon favourite, Milly Alcock.
Due to the massive success of season one following its release in 2019, including the AACTA for best comedy series, Upright returned for a second run in 2022, and eventually went on to air in the US, UK and Canada.
However, Minchin has declared that there will be no season three.
“I think the story is done,” he said.
“Milly doesn’t need to go back and play Meg again. I mean, sometimes I think, imagine… if we jumped 10 years, just like we jumped four years between the first season said we did real time jumps… I suspect it’s let it be.
“I just absolutely loved it, and Milly’s off on a different journey now.”
Minchin’s new book, You Don’t Have To Have A Dream, is out now.
