Joker brings in a further $7.4m over the weekend, beating Hustlers and Gemini Man

Female led-drama, Hustlers, and action flick, Gemini Man, have failed to topple the Joker in their opening weekend at the Australian box office. Hustlers, which stars Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu as strippers who become con artists during the Global Financial Crisis, came in second on the weekend earning $2.819 million from 368 screens.

Gemini Man stars Will Smith as Henry Brogan, a former assassin being hunted by a clone of his younger self – also played by Smith. The film came in behind Hustlers with $1.513 million from 370 screens.

Joker brought in $7.439 million from 541 screens over the weekend, a drop of 24% from last weekend’s $10 million debut. The film stars Joaquin Pheonix as the titular villain from the DC Comics Universe, telling the story of how The Joker came to be. There has been public criticism that the film promotes incel culture, but it continues to climb, with a running total of $22m at the Australian box office.
