Jonno Simpson, Twitter Australia’s first employee, joins Unscriptd

Twitter Australia’s first employee and its former head of sport, Jonno Simpson, has joined international athlete publishing agency Unscriptd.

Simpson takes on the newly created role of sports marketing director Australasia and will be charged with growing Unscriptd’s network of sports personalities.

The agency, co-founded by former Gemba partner Ben Crowe, former Gemba head of insights Todd Deacon and ex-Nike global vice president Brent Scrimshaw in 2013, specialises in allowing athletes to publish their own content across platforms and link them with brands.

Athletes working with Unscriptd include Cristiano Ronaldo, Gerard Pique, Ander Herrera, Virat Kohli and Andre Agassi, as well as Australia’s own Stephanie Gilmore, Mick Fanning, Patty Mills, Trent Cotchin and Paddy Dangerfield.

Crowe said Simpson’s experience growing Twitter’s engagement with sports would be a major asset as the business prepared for its next stage of growth.

“Jonno joins Unscriptd at a very exciting time of growth for the business,” Crowe said.

“There are so many different ways we are helping athletes as publishers and Jonno is one of the best in the business and we’re thrilled to have him join our team.”

Simpson, who was head of social media at the AFL before joining Twitter, said the new role would allow athletes and their sponsors to reach larger audiences.

“It’s such an exciting company (and category) and I look forward to drawing on my past experiences in global sport, media and tech, to amplify athletes via Unscriptd’s platform, digital publishing solutions, and engaging content,” Simpson said.
