Luhrmann’s $120m Gatsby to shoot in Sydney

Baz Luhrmann’s 3D re-imagining of The Great Gatbsy, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, will be shot in Sydney, with pre-production set to begin in March followed by a 17-week shoot in August.

“This comes at a good time for the film industry. Australia was thought to be losing international filmmaking due to the strong Aussie dollar – put simply, this is a big win,” said NSW Premier Kristina Keneally.

The announcement also comes at good time for Keneally – just five weeks before the state election – whose Government helped secure this production through the state’s enhanced film investment fund:

“We’re determined to keep skilled NSW cast and crew working right here, and we’ll work to strengthen our leadership in the film and PDV (post digital visual effects) industry both here and overseas,” said Keneally. “What better endorsement of our State’s world-class film-making capabilities – we’ve won right to produce this iconic New York story ahead of New York itself.”

According to information released by Keneally’s office, The Great Gatsby will inject more than $120m into the NSW economy, supporting more than 825 jobs.

The Bazmark Films project is backed by Warner Bros. and will be based at Fox Studios in Sydney, with location work, VFX and post-production (scheduled to take place over 30 weeks)  also to take place in NSW.

The Great Gatsbywill be a boon for the NSW film industry, particularly given Baz Luhrmann’s commitment to maximising use of local cast, crew and visual effects expertise,” added Keneally.
