Mamamia takes top spot in podcast ranker for first time

Mamamia Out Loud has taken pole position in the Australian Podcast Ranker for January, beating a slew of news programs from major networks.

This marks the first time the podcast has hit #1 on the list, in a month that saw the show reach its highest-ever monthly listener total, 755,303.

For the month, downloads were up 31% year-on-year, with 2.02m, marking a 47.1% leap over the past 18-month period.

In addition, Mamamia landed three more podcasts in the Top 20 of the Australian-made shows. True Crime Conversations climbed eleven spots to sit at #15, with 245,280 monthly listeners, and 536,264 downloads, bumping The Quickly down to #16 (243,596 listeners, 721,224 downloads).

No Filter is sitting at #20, with 223,032 listeners and 569,901 downloads.

Mamamia said the win was down to its counter-programming strategy — ‘Hot Pod Summer — which saw the brand continue publishing new episodes throughout the summer, when radio networks traditionally take a break.

“Hitting #1 isn’t a fluke of the calendar; it’s a proof of concept,” Zara Curtis, Mamamia’s chief content officer wrote in a press release.

“It proves that when the big broadcast machines take a breath over Summer, Mamamia Out Loud, and our entire podcast network, does not.”

Hamish and Andy was one of these shows that has been on hiatus from December 4. Despite not issuing a new episode throughout January, it managed to sit at #7 on the ranker, proving the strength of its 320-episode back catalogue.

“Hamish and Andy Plus +” climbed 19 spots to sit at #9. This is a summer trivia series hosted by the duo, albeit on a different podcast feed to the main channel. If they had combined the two, the show would be at #2, behind Mamamia, and ahead of ABC News Top Stories, which took the #2 spot this month.
