Masterchef’s second series delivers 1.7m for Ten
Opportunistic scheduling by Nine with a last minute scheduling of a documentary about murdered criminal Carl Williams failed to dent Ten’s launch of Masterchef, which debuted with an audience of nearly 1.7m on Monday night.
The debut is well ahead of last year’s 1.4m debut for Masterchef. And while the Masterchef series opener last year only ranked seventh in the ratings, yesterday it won the night.
Meanwhile, Carl Williams: Baby Faced Killer – originally part of Nine’s Families of Crime series – rated just under 1.1m for Nine, 11th for the night, according to preliminary overnight metro figures from OzTam. The Masterchef halo also shone on Ten’s The 7PM Project which nearly made 1m viewers – it’s biggest audience in a long time.
Seven was the hardest hit by Ten’s strong performance, with the former only managing a 22.2 per cent channel share behind Ten with 24.5 per cent and Nine with 24.8 per cent.
Monday’s most-watched shows:
- Masterchef Ten 1.692m
- Seven News Seven 1.577m
- Today Tonight Seven 1.521m
- Nine News Nine 1.404m

- GO!: 2.5%
- ABC2: 1.1%

Would the advertisers be happy with this? Clearly it was going to beat last year’s debut, no one knew about the show then, but now its a hit. Or will the numbers build like last year?
Masterchef, Biggest Loser, Survivor, Dancing with anybody etc etc….enough already with the reality stuff! However, glad to see the 7p.m. Project pick up extra audience

Your story is plain wrong. Nine’s Carl Williams program last night was not a “re-run” but part of a new series called Australian Families of Crime done by Graham MacNeice productions for Nine. The series is still being shot but the Williams episode was in the can and ready to roll. It was Nine’s good fortune to have it ready to air at such short notice. It’s also prompted the network to launch the entire series early and the first of these – on the Milat family – goes out on Sunday night after Underbelly. It has major new disclosures on the Milat saga which Nine claim will “shock you all”.
As it happens – and again contrary to your reporting – Nine says it’s delighted with the 1.1 million it got for Williams last night with no pre-publicity whatsoever. The news release announcing the schedule change went out at 6.12 pm and even this morning, Nine MSN had nothing on Sunday’s Milat program. At best, Nine was expecting around 900-thousand viewers for Williams so the extra 300-thousand was a bonus. And if it didn’t “dent” Masterchef – and 1.1 million is a good outing anytime in this business – it pretty much soaked up the remaining audience on the night.
You guys need to get out a bit more. Not your finest hour covering television, that’s for sure.
@ GeeDee……Work for Ch9 do we?
A thought then GeeDee….And a note to TV buyers……Only pay for 900k viewers as that’s all they expect in the future! Mind you, don’t buy of GeeDee as 1.1m minus 900k is actually 200k bonus viewers, not 300k……….50% inflation on bonus views GeeDee?…you must work for Ch9.
As a matter of fact, Grant, no. It’s about getting your facts right and this story has major errors that needed correcting. Is that OK with you?
*So does that mean 1.1m minus 900k equals 300k??? and;
*Are you in authority to state that CH9 only expect 900k viewers? or was this incorrect “Reporting” too?
OK, so I can’t add up, Granty boy. Is that all? And ain’t you got somethin better to do?
I feel like a whale being attacked by plankton.
The method behind the madness is simple…If you are going to attack someone’s reporting quite aggressively, make sure your OWN facts are straight first!
Ooh, we are sensitive aren’t we? Did you write the offending piece yourself, Grant? So I got my addition wrong. Mea Culpa here and now. Check out the rest and you’ll find it’s 100 per cent right. End of story. Correspondence closed.
I wish I could close correspondence that easily! It’s enough trouble just trying to bait someone these days. You’all just damn too smartz for uz folk theze dayz!…..Boredom, when will it ever end???
I’m with you ron, so sick of reality, and why are we giving air time to drug running murdering criminals. My tv went off and read a book.
Hi GeeDee,
Despite the ensuing comments row – fair point on Families of Crime not having run yet. I’ve amended the wording of the piece to reflect that.
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella
I too am very glad to see 7pm Project’s ratings improve. The program has real value for viewer and advertiser now. Sorry to say though I’m a Reality TV tragic – tonight I’ll be glued to Masterchef then Survivor after 7pm Project.
It’s not really a boisterous disturbance! More a nonsensical visual impairment to your readers…..Apologies to those that wasted their time eyeballing my observations!
