Matildas final draws biggest ratings for Ten since 2023

The final of the Women’s Asian Cup may have seen the Matildas go down 1-0 to Japan, but it was an unqualified victory for Ten, which drew its biggest TV audiences since the Melbourne Cup in 2023.

The match reached 2.66m viewers on Saturday night, with average audiences of 1.36m throughout.

It drew 233,000 streaming viewers, which is Ten’s highest-ever overnight streaming audience, and dominated viewership for its timeslot, with a 55.8% commercial share of audience, 65.8% in the 25 to 54s, and a massive 77.2% in 16 to 39s.

In addition the post-game coverage pulled 1.74m total viewers, averaging 443,000, while the pre-game show attracted 1.49m, and an average of 400,000.

It was the most-watched free-to-air program on Saturday, and became Ten’s most-watched event since the 2023 Melbourne Cup, which averaged 1.7 million total national viewers.

A media release issued by Ten, quoting Oztam figures, said the entire Women’s Asian Cup tournament reached 6.4 million total viewers, with Saturday’s coverage — including pre- and post-match shows — reaching a total de-duplicated audience of 3.2 million.

Aside from the TV audiences, the nailbiter also drew a crowd of 74,397 at Stadium Australia in Sydney.
