Matthew Newton to host The X Factor
Underbelly 2 star Matthew Newton is to host The X Factor, Channel Seven has announced.
As has previously been revealed, the singing talent show features judges Kyle Sandilands, Natalie Imbruglia, Guy Sebastian and Ronan Keating.
“I’m extremely honoured to be given this opportunity,” Newton said. “This is a massive show and a massive opportunity. I’m a huge fan of the UK version and can’t wait to get started.”
Auditions began in Perth yesterday.
Newton is the son of Nine frontman Bert Newton. Matthew Newton has been in the headlines in recent weeks after spending time in a melbourne rehab clinic.
What an inappropriate choice for the host of a programme which is targeted at teens and families.
It just goes to show that you can be (edited by Mumbrella for legal reasons), and still get a top job on TV.
This is a ridiculous decision.
Maybe he is there to stop female contestants talking back…
Put his personal issues aside, he’s still a bad choice. I’ve seen him working in theatre as well as on the telly and he always comes across as sleazy. Not what you want in a host!
First it was Matthew Johns (how long did his show last?), Kyle Sandilands and now Matthew Newton. The 7 Network really mines the bottom of the barrel for so-called Australian “talent”. I hope this show goes the way of Matty Shows most excellent television outing but I suspect it will be propped up because the network paid so much for the rights.
I wonder if the crowd chanting “X, X, X, X” over and over again will send him into a mental breakdown… (edited by MUmbrella for legal reasons)
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Lee, you might want to sit down – I have some very bad news for you…
Wow, really? Not that I watched the show to begin with…..I can’t stand aything on 7….but there is no way I could watch it now! He just makes me want to wash myself. Bleuck.
Was looking forward to the new show, but with Newton hosting it, NO WAY!!
Boy, so much for supporting anyone with Mental Health issues. Having just got back from an extensive work trip OS, this is exactly what I despise within my fellow countrymen. I am personally not a fan of MN, however a little support rather than knocking him down before you have even seen him perform, is just, well…..mental.
Now, I understand Sandilands controversial / offensive comments increasing ratings, but what has MN does to create interest with XFactor audience? The family friendly crowd are hardly going to be appealed with someone who has both drug and anger problems.
Jodes – we should whole heartedly support people with mental health problems back into the workforce. However, this should probably be done once he has had some time out of the limelight to actually fix his problems.
My concern is that he is being paid as a professional judge of sometimes very naive people in the public domain – a power that I do not believe someone with a history of physical abuse and anger issues should be provided.
