Melbourne radio ratings: Drop in drivetime for 3AW after Derryn Hinch
Fairfax Media’s talk station 3AW saw the biggest fall in share in the latest set of radio ratings with a drop from 15.4% of the audience to 13.9%. However, it remained the most listened to station, although ABC774 closed the gap.
Meanwhile, Southern Cross Austereo’s Fox FM, was top FM commercial station with a Monday to Sunday share of 9.3%.
The battle for breakfast remained relatively stable, with 3AW’s Ross & John pulling in an 18.2% share while the top commercial team is Fox FM’s Matt & Jo.
Meanwhile the drivetime slot previously occupied by Derryn Hinch on 3AW saw a drop from 12.7 per cent to 10.6 per cent. The ratings cover both his final weeks and the first weeks of new host Tom Elliott. Hinch was dropped by the station at the end of the year.
It fell to second behind FoxFM after ending last year on top.
Will things ever change in Melbourne radio? There is no competition.
Must say, I like Tom Elliott, and have recently been switching over to 3AW Drive – something I never used to do.
He’s probably a bit too high-brow for the station’s usual listeners though 😉
It is no surprise that the ratings dropped after Hinch left the chair; he was not my cup of tea and he drove me to anger at times with his disingenuous and egocentric side, but he was a dyed-in-the-wool radio presenter. Hinch was a master of the art of radio.
I sometimes feel that there are people running radio stations, who live in a sweat and a fever of frantic despair. It is as if these people have no real conviction and no real ideas about radio and what makes it tick ; they merely bog on day after day, hoping for a lift in the ratings and gripping their solar plexuses whenever there is a drop.
Radio must talk to one person and it must engender trust, it must inform and educate without preaching and it must never alienate.
Perhaps Hinch had been at it for so long that he simply burned out, I do not know, but love him or hate him, he was a master of the art.
Tom Elliot is soo bad. Too highbrow? The guy has no history knowledge. If they had to replace Hinch ( and I wish they hadn’t) couldn’t they have used another Journalist.
My dial is now Rafael Epstein on 774
3AW is losing its touch. Tom was good on weekends but the pair who replaced him are just shockingly stupid. Sunday mornings was worth listening to around the end of last year until John Michael Howson came back and now it’s …. yawn time again. Now Tom is loosing Darren’s old top spot.
Wilson did u listen to John Michael on Sunday he maxes lot of sense in relation to the siege. Tom Elliot needs his daddy. What is it with all these presenters who are always bringing their mommies and daddies on their shows due to lack of material
Sorry Derryn was sacked Tom Elliot has little knowledge on everyday life. Rafael Epstein is excellent in fact 774 is very good overall goodbye 3AW no more advertisement noise !!
There is not doubt Tom is intelligent but at the end of the day he is just a banker who accidentally got into radio. Derryn has spent his entire life in journalism and although i did not agree with everything he said no one could even fault his commitment and total passion he has for his job and craft. As for Rafael Epstein….hahahahaha…have you ever heard him do a program without 176 mistakes? His voice is almost as annoying as Red’s also. The only great presenter currently is John faine. Mitchell is O.K…but if you can every catch a word he says between then 6523753276532 Ad’s on 3aw i would be surprised. I reckon he only speaks about 15 minutes per hour the rest is filled with Ad’s…
Tom Elliott is a breath of fresh air on 3AW drive. Next move is to make Tony Martin a regular on Grubby and Dee Dee’s weekend show, or better yet, give him the slot!
Get This! is one of commercial radio’s highlights of the last 10 years. More Tony please…
I thought the guy who filled in for JMH was a breathe of fresh air, Can’t remember his name though
Bit harsh on Tom Elliott. Any new presenter will be in the shadows of a former host. This was the first survey and 774 had cricket listeners on board. Some of these should revert to AW.
(Opinions are only opinions and in mine some 774 hosts, with the exception of Mr Faine, continue to sound gratingly undergraduate.)
Tom Elliot was great as a finance reporter but he has not lifted a gear personality wise to lead a 3 hour drive show. I find him very boring, very right wing, very private school….I wasnt a huge Hinch fan but he was never dull, something Tom will never be able to claim. I think we’ll see new management at AW in 2014 after this experiment has failed.
Faine?……yes, well. Faine is good, he tends to indulge in conservative finger wagging, and isn’t averse to intellectual bullying from time to time, but he is certainly not bad.
My absolute heroine is Fran Kelly; sharp interviewer, first class journalist and excellent radio personality and voice.
She is well placed where she is, but , in my opinion, she would be not only a breath of spring, but a great asset in commercial radio.
Sack the bloke who sacked hinch.
Richard Moss & John have said it all; correctly
what bad move loosing Hinch on 3 AW – the drive program have become boring
thr GM should be fired
The hot breakfast is the leading morning show and the Rush hour the premier drive show. TRIPLE M ROCKS
