Mercedes-Benz and Airbnb offer ‘glamping’ on Cockatoo Island to launch Marco Polo Activity Van

Mercedes-Benz will set up three Marco Polo Activity Vans on Sydney Harbour’s Cockatoo Island to launch its new five and seven-seater vans.
The vans can be booked for a night of ‘glamping’ on the island via Airbnb for $15.
Nine couples who book via Airbnb will spend the night on the island in the van, which Diane Tarr, managing director of Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia says is part of the brand doing things differently.
“Instead of a regular vehicle launch, we wanted to bring the spirit of the Marco Polo to life – the feeling of adventure, and the notion that with the Marco Polo ACTIVITY you can experience truly unique destinations. What better way to do this than to wake up with the most iconic view in the world – Sydney harbour. We’re truly excited to be collaborating with our agency partners, The Royals and Character, to create this once-in-a-lifetime experience on Airbnb.”
The van can provide a 2m-long bedding area and features a pop-up roof to make way for another bed.
The campers, who will be on the island from 10-12 August will also have access to a dedicated host and will tuck into hampers and breakfast provided by Sonoma bakery.
Cockatoo, the biggest island in Sydney Harbour, is at the junction of the Parramatta and Lane Cove rivers and was awarded Unesco World Heritage Site status in 2010.
Sam McDonagh, country manager for Airbnb Australia and New Zealand, added: “Airbnb connects people with unique travel experiences all around the world so they can belong anywhere.
“We are delighted to be teaming up with Mercedes-Benz Vans to bring this once-in-a-lifetime experience to a few lucky guests.”
The problem is, all the dates are “unavailable”, so these few spots must have been booked out ages ago. Why not make it a “lucky dip” and let everyone who requests a spot be in the draw. As it is you are directed to a Contact Host page where you write a few lines about why you want to come to Cockatoo Island. So far so good. Then it tells you the dates selected are not available. No dates in August are available.
Why have it on the page if it is booked out ( probably by savvy MB mates ). Bad taste , bad idea. Competition all good but this is just junk.
As a Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo costs AU$ SEVENTY-FIVE GRAND (!) Winning the comp may be most people’s only chance of staying in one.
It was on a first come first serve basis, maybe read the article before lashing out.
Dates are only available over 3 nights, if you had tried booking on the 2nd of August when the competition started on the 1st at 12pm obviously you missed out.
Don’t be a sore loser.
