Merger between Gumtree Cars and Carsguide approved
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has granted approval for Gumtree to acquire Cox Media, the parent company of online vehicle classifieds platforms Carsguide and Autotrader.
ACCC chair Rod Sims said merger was approved as it was unlikely to lead to a worsening of competition in the classifieds space.

I always thought Cox would be the right people to finally make Carsguide a challenger in the automotive classified space to Carsales, they had the resources and the expertise. They had a massive opportunity to do this when the dealers took it over prior to Cox, it was just unfortunate that the then CEO was more focussed on promoting her self interests(including herself) than stopping the monopoly that is Carsales.
I don’t think this move will have Carsales worrying too much…
I wonder if the ACCC took into consideration the mass exodus and now redundancies at Drive/CarAdvice and that with them potentially dropping out of the market maybe it will be a lot smaller than it once was?
