Metro Screen calls for new projects
NSW screen education centre Metro Screen has launched a call for applications for funding of 13 new film projects.
Metro Screen, based in Sydney, is making the call under three programs – First Break, Breakout and Indigenous Breakthrough.
First Break is designed to fund and support ten ten-minute projects from emerging film makers. It includes a $4,000 production budget, access to equipment and post production facilities, and a workshop with a script editor.
Breakout is aimed at more experienced teams and will support two projects of 15 minutes with a $15,ooo production budget.
And Indigenous Breakthrough Funding and Support will fund one 20 minute project with $22,000
The deadline for applications is January 20.
Funding schemes from Screen NSW and Screen Australia.
Perfect illustratration of how fragmented & dysfuctionai this sector currently is –
oniy NSW residents with NSW stories & iocations need appy.
Please note that this funding also exists in the other states.
Here in Queensland, QPIX runs a similarly funded program and has done for many years.
In fact, we are also calling for applications in Queensland right now.
Contact barry@qpix.org.au for more info.
Barry – & you believe that this somehow makes it all OK – acceptable?
Please enlighten us? Where does this leave VIC – SA or WA writers who for arguments sake have developed Qld based screenplays?
Hey Non Cockroach,
The First Break scheme at Metro Screen is part of the national Screen Development Australia initiative called Raw Nerve.
Here’s a link to each of the orgs running the scheme in each state:

My state never does anything like this (the last emerging writers initiative they had stated you were only eligible if you attended one of their overpriced seminars with a failed screenwriter) – but why not just submit your project under an alias?
Sure they will find out. But if your project is good enough to be selected, it shouldn’t matter where you’re located should it? Then again, reading the criteria on the Metro page, nearly all of the spots in the program are required to be filled by various minorities (indigenous, multicultural background, rural…) – is this a program to develop talent or to satisfy diversity needs? Pretty shameful, when good development of young writers is such a dire need for this industry.
Hi Non Cockroach,
The Metro Screen First Breaks funding is part of Screen Development Australia’s scheme called Raw Nerve. There are similar funding opportunities happening in each state. There is a link on our website to each of the SDA state organisations where you can find out more about how to apply in your area.

B – quick off the draw spruiking – sorry – but this was not a trick Q – developed what I believe is a very commercial screenplay – I’m not a resident of that particular state – so where does that leave us? (writers). Don’t much fancy your chances with local Border issues eitheir given writers don’t even recognise International ones.
Seems because some of my comments are viewed as controversial – they are reviewed – as a consequence my responses’s are out of sequence – just say this – this current system (model) is in need of urgent change (no jobs) – some of us outside (writers) do what we can – others such as you guys inside can haisten this change – because what were doing now simply doesn’t work – that parochial state border issue being but one illustration…
