Mix Melbourne rebranded as Kiis with Hughesy and Kate returning to radio replacing Rosso in Drive
The Australian Radio Network has started the consolidation of its stations rebranding Melbourne station Mix 101.1 as Kiis 101.1, with Dave Hughes and Kate Langbroek replacing Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross in national Drive.
Speculation had been mounting about the station name change following the success the network has had in rebranding its Mix station in Sydney to Kiis in January, taking it from bottom to top of the FM stations in the ratings.
The announcement of Hughes and Langbroek also signals an end to Ross’ time with the network which he joined in 2011 for the Drive segment. Last week former co-host Merrick Watts ruled out a “reformation” with Ross in his new TripleM Drive show.
This is a matter of high disgrace for the Brisbane audience of ARN via the ARN managed/DMG JV, 97.3 FM
To the parochial Brisbane audience, a Melbourne show with Melbourne talent will be beamed into Brisbane and be an hour stale for half the year.
What’s worse is the end of Paul ‘Campo’ Campion on drive, a show he dominates with a #1 share, all people, all stations.
Campo is Brisbane drive radio having been number one at both Brisbane stations he’s worked at.
97.3 skews older than Mix in Melb or Sydney ever have let alone as Kiis. 97.3 exploits the gaping double decker bus sized hole in the formats of Brisbane radio with nothing between the young cluster of B105/MMM/Nova and the AM wasteland of KQ and BH (Magic 882).
Sure, ARN will operate the drive show in a ‘virtual live’ sense as they do for most shifts and therefore the music can be tailored, but the talent will not be and Campo will no longer be talking with #1 share of the Brisbane drive audience.
Along with 973 program director Barry Drinkwater, Campo has been there from the start of 973 in 2001 and so has Greg Hinksy Hinks who sadly has been booted. A disgraceful end to it all, sums it all up ARN.
I am over the networked shows…I understand the costs or logistics of consolidating shows into one show broadcast in various markets but I still like the “local” flavor of local shows/hosts in each market.
so much for quitting then heh Hughesy and Kate? Any idea how much they are going to be paid? Anything like the other surprise “in-demand” duo Hamish and Andy?
This will not be the spectacular emergence ARN are hoping for.
KIIS does not translate to the Melbourne market and Hughesy and Kate still reek of Nova!
They might run into problems rebranding Mix as KIIS in Canberra. Mix is the number one station here and Canberrans don’t tolerate rebranding exercises at all. Local shopping centre Woden Plaza was rebranded as Westfield in 1981 and people here still call it Woden Plaza or The Plaza.
Well said Queenslander. I think you may be proven very right.
