New Spider-Man film earns $2.6m at weekend box office, failing to beat The Grinch

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse pulled in $2.606m in earnings over the weekend across 421 screens, but failed to make more than Universal’s The Grinch.

The animated film tells the story of teenager Miles Morales, who develops mysterious powers after being bitten by a radio active spider. He must use his skills to battle Kingpin, a man who can open portals to other universes, and pull different versions of Spider-Man into his world.

In the US, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse achieved the biggest US opening weekend for an animated film in December, making US$35.4m (AU$50.74m).
