Steven Spielberg film Ready Player One pulls in $3.9m on first weekend

The latest fantasy film from Steven Spielberg, Ready Player One, took $3.9m at the Australian box office over the Easter weekend, overtaking animated comedy Peter Rabbit.

Starring Mark Rylance, Olivia Cooke and Tye Sheridan, the film is based on Ernest Cline’s novel and is set in 2045, where the world is on the verge of collapsing. However, its people have found salvation in a virtual reality universe.

It aired across 480 screens over the long weekend.
